Swami Sivananda Saraswati of Rishikesh (1887–1963) was a prolific author whose extensive body of work—comprising over 200 publications on various aspects of yoga and spirituality—have significantly shaped contemporary understandings of yoga. In this talk, I will examine Sivananda's presentation of japa as a distinct form of yoga in his influential work Japa Yoga: A Comprehensive Treatise on Mantra-Sastra, arguably the most widely read text on mantra practice. First published in the 1930s, the book was later revised, expanded and translated into numerous languages. Widely circulated due its accessibility and low cost, the text remains one of the most popular expositions on mantra practice. Written in a clear and accessible style, Japa Yoga reflects Sivananda's pedagogical aim: to instruct and inspire aspirants.
Framing mantra repetition (japa) as a distinct type of yoga, Sivananda presents a wide array of mantras—including tantric ones—while underscoring the importance of receiving a mantra from a qualified guru, rather than selecting one arbitrarily from a book. The text also explores the attainment of special powers through mantra practice (mantrasiddhi) and provides detailed instructions on mantra-writing (likhita japa), a practice seldom elaborated upon in other works. This talk will explore how Japa Yoga contributed to the popularization and systematization of mantra practice.
