The Development of Sri Aurobindo Studies in Contemporary Academia: Texts, Archives, Institutions, and Transcultural Networks

The study of Sri Aurobindo's writings and his integral yoga philosophy within modern academic institutions raises a question worth examining: how does a philosophical and spiritual project, articulated outside the university, enter academic discourse? This paper argues that Sri Aurobindo studies developed through a set of distinct textual, archival, and institutional conditions whose history requires investigation.

Archival work carried out at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Archives in Pondicherry from the 1970s onwards has been foundational for any academic work on Sri Aurobindo, but the primary institutional vehicle for the entry of the guru's thought into Western academia has been the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), San Francisco, founded by Haridas Chaudhuri and Frederic Spiegelberg.

This paper traces the genealogy of ideas that led to the founding of CIIS and examines the sustained role the institution has played in bringing Sri Aurobindo's integral philosophy into dialogue with transpersonal psychology, comparative religion, consciousness studies, and contemporary philosophy. Notably it questions the use of the term “Integral,” which rather than functioning as a fixed doctrinal marker, has been freely interpreted. The word retains sufficient connection to Sri Aurobindo's original framework to anchor institutional identity but remains open enough to engage with later integral theories and broader interdisciplinary studies.

Sri Aurobindo studies now exist as a field that has extended beyond the CIIS. The paper therefore concludes by suggesting that the maturation of Sri Aurobindo studies as a truly international academic field will depend on whether methodologically plural and geographically dispersed approaches can be brought into sustained dialogue. We suggest that the conditions for such an exchange are, for the first time, beginning to take shape.
